Venetian masks and masquerading have been a common practice among Venetians since the 12th century. During carnival time, social distinctions were abandoned and the anonymity of the masks gave free rein to the fantasies, passions, and desires of the masked courtesans. This vibrant celebration continues to this day, brought to life through the craftsmanship and meticulous details of Domenico Sartore.
Aurora, the sunrise, represents Eos. In Greek mythology, Eos was the goddess of Dawn. sister of Selene (the Moon) and Helios (the Sun). From her island home, she rose up into the sky each morning in a golden chariot drawn by winged horses scattering the dark mists of the night with her rosy brilliance. The Greek poet frequently mentions this beautiful goddess in the Iliad and the Odyssey, referring to her as "rosy-fingered", "early-rising", and "saffron-robed".
